Forks Over Knives invited me to participate in The Great Protein Debate. The debate featured myself along with Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine. While I believe it’s best to put at least a little focus on consuming higher protein foods, Dr. Barnard tends to think we don’t really need to worry about it. Whether you’re vegan, veg-curious, or simply protein-conscious, you’ll want to tune into this one, as you’re sure to walk away with clarity, insights, and answers to your most pressing protein-related questions.

Topics we covered:

  • What are the current guidelines for protein intake, and are they adequate?
  • Is it difficult to get enough protein on a 100% plant-based diet?
  • Do vegans need to pay special attention to ensure they get their protein needs met?
  • What are the best protein sources for plant-based eaters? Does protein quality differ between legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds?
  • Is it harder for athletes on a vegan diet to meet their protein needs?
    • Protein powders, yay or nay?
  • What about older adults and the risk of age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)? Do they need to think more about getting enough protein?
  • And more!
